Shed Hunt at Stephan's Farm

Sunday, March 24. 2013

9:00 AM - 12 Noon

Each year, male white tailed deer shed their antlers, which you can find as you walk in the countryside. The Upton Open Space Committee are co-hosting a Shed Hunt at the former Stephan's Farm in Upton. We will divide into small groups that will go for an off-trail treasure hunt looking for deer antlers.

There is rough footing in places and it can be wet,.so wear appropriate shoes. Protective clothing and eye wear are also recommended (brambles, branches and shrubs can hurt).

This program is open to all ages and skill levels. Children are welcome with supervision. Liability waiver required. A parent must sign for anyone under 18. Meet in the parking area at the Community Garden on Mechanic Street, Upton (near the power lines). As a courtesy to hikers who may be fearful or allergic, please leave pets at home. There is no charge. Inclement weather cancels. Please send email to uptonopenspaceevents@charter.net for notification about cancellation or other news.

NWTF Woman In The OutDoors Program Century Sportsmen Club

The weather held out for the 48 woman who attended this WITO Program !!! I want to thank everyone for the invite & with the core of Instructors the woman received a full day of information in the fields that they had interest in. My brother Al along with Rick & Donna made the Tree Stand segment an enjoyable presentation that the woman can now feel comfortable to at least know which ever stand they chose ( with a little practice ) they can use safely.

Shed Hunt

Spring is here! It is a great time of the year to look for antler sheds. Thanks to Marcella Stasa and the Upton Open Space Committee along with fellow Instructor George Dagostino who presented a brief Map & Compass orientation, we were able to schedule and coordinate a Shed Hunt at Stefan’s Farm in Upton, MA. Even though rain was predicted there were approximately 25 outdoor enthusiasts from across the Commonwealth including renown pencil  artist, Ryan Jacques, dressed and ready at 9:00 AM to scour the forest floor. A photograph of the group’s findings is pictured above. The group had so much fun that they decided that this Hunt should become an annual event.
I would like to thank everyone for coming and look forward to seeing you next year!
Yours Truly,
Gerry Lemire

The B.I.G. MOE 2011

Our Team of instructors Rick, Donna,& brother Albert had a fullfilled day teaching Tree Stand Safety. Excellent weather brought out some enthused participants at the MOE on Sunday September 25th 2011. Though it was a tedious task we instilled the importance to be connected from the time you leave the ground until you return. It makes it all worth while knowing we had a positive effect.

The following is an email I received from fellow Board Member Gary Zima.

Gerry

The Expo did go over quite well this year. Thanks again for your support and conducting another great station this year. I heard a number of very positive comments from participants who were at the station. While conducting exit surveys at the end of the day, one individual listed tree stand safety as their best activity station at Expo! Congrats again for all your hard work.

Gary.
